Bob Dob's Luey Invades in Urban Vinyl

I haven't written a lot about urban vinyl yet, but while the holiday shopping season is still strong, I wanted to point out what I think is a perfect example of what urban vinyl is, and it's something that is available for the holiday season.

StrangeCo recently released Luey, a character created by underground artist Bob Dob. Luey is available in three versions: Drinking, Smoking, and Raging. Each one features limited posability and retails for $19.99.

Urban vinyl action figures often begin with very basic designs. Certainly, these figures don't feature the intricate sculpting or articulation featured on action figures made by companies like McFarlane Toys or NECA. But urban vinyl sets out to achieve perfection by capturing the vision of the artist, and Luey, to me, represents a fantastic example of this kind of perfection. At $19.99, Luey is also very reasonably priced for urban vinyl, but at this point in the holiday season, you may have to pay more for shipping to have it under the tree by December 25th.

Singer, actor, Heavenly King - All those words can be used to describe one person. A person of class and respect. However this isn't about Andy Lau, this is about Jay Chou (hey he's cool, seriously).

ENTERBAY in conjunction with Chou are doing a one-sixth. Jay will over see the production himself (I know, you were worried weren't you).

For those of you who don't know who he is check out the vid below. He's done a lot actually (and he is talented) but there is this sick desire I have to see a Mandarin hip hop video on this site. I don't even like hip hop to be honest but it's 2:41 AM and I feel like torturing myself.

Ryo Honda Dec 2007 Kabakuro - Review

Background

Ryo Honda is a Japanese illustrator who just recently released his first figure - Kabakuro. The figure was launched at the tokyomade Design Festa booth. The release coincided with the drop of Honda’s hand-illustrated black and white book – Kabakuro First Story.

A symbol of the father and son bond, this Japanese designed toy is a model of Kabakuro and his little son Shiro. The same characters that are featured in Ryo Honda's first picture book, Kabakuro First Story, also released at the Tokyo Design Festa.

Packaging

The figure is packaged within an illustrated cardboard box. There are several drawings by Ryo Honda. The drawings depict the characters posing for a photo. Since there is no window pane, it’s probably not a displayable box.

IWG (Insurgents Wilderness Gruppo ) Dec 2007 Baby Cubs Reviewed

Background

If you thought that the adult Insurgents Wilderness Gruppo (IWG) characters were all alone in their fight against poachers and other environmentally evil types…you were wrong. Patrick Ma and Rocket World have added the IWG Baby Cubs to the already formidable collection of rebellious animals.

There are several retailer exclusives, but the two widely released characters are Ares the Baby Grizzly Bear and Ginga the Baby White Rhino. And for the first time ever, Rocket World has released blank figures for the customizers.

Packaging

The Baby Cubs line brings back the Rocket World IWG inspired camouflage design. There is a little background reading on the rear of the package. And each figure is secured in a double plastic tray that alleviates the need for any twist ties.

The Figures

Both Ares the Baby Grizzly Bear and Ginga the Baby White Rhino areapproximately 3.5” in height. Ares has 3 points of articulation (armsand head), while Ginga has 4 (arms, head and tail). They are made ofboth rotocast (the head) and injection molded (body) vinyl. Eachfigure is packaged with a pointy stick for roasting either eyeballs ormarshmallows. Personally, I’d probably go with a nice and toastymarshmallow over a human eye. But that’s just me.

Ares and Ginga are both limited to a run of 500...

I think that customizers might like this...especially customizers who like to produce miniature dioramas. Re-Ment International have produced a line of miniature pieces called Puchi Petites. They take everyday items, primarily food, and shrink them down keeping an amazingly original look. And plus...it sorta makes me hungry.
